This is a pleasure for me to welcome all of you at this site of Bethune Institute of Geriatrics Research and Rehabilitation Centre.
The Idea of Setting up of this type of Institute dates back to the year 2004 when almost final bell was ringing for me , But serious efforts of Dr.P.K.Hazra, Prof.Dr.M.K. Chhetri and also hundreds and hundreds of my well-wishers brought me back from the door of death. After I came round I felt to render some services to the society to whom I was duty bound to pay back my indebtedness.
I have been in social services and trade-union movement for the last 55 years. I have very closely seen the miseries and suffering of the people and oppression of the workforce .Further , due to the maladjustment in the society there is a phenomenal generation gap. Hence, there is a very gray idea lying uncared for , the area is the area of the poverty stricken people are suffering mentally and financially . Most of them do not get proper medical treatment and social treatment and social treatment in the society . Side by side the economically weak persons have no resources to go to a doctor and can not effort to purchase medicines.
With this end in view I thought establishing an Institute who would serve the aged people , affording medical treatment at a very low cost and other services, which are requirerd for their live hood , so that they do not feel alone and deserted in the society .Our aim is to the ratability them properly.
For poverty stricken people we have already started arranging medical camp distributing medicines free of cost.
On the above background some of the ex-employees of Joy engineering Work’s union and local residence assembled in August 2004 at the premises of the Joy engineering and Work’s union decided to form a society to fulfill our Mission . The Institute was thus registered on 18.04.2005. I am greatefull the hospitals, Doctors, and Philanthropic people who have stood by our side. Cooperation of our valued members and employs are also worth-mentioning.
But, I apple to you come forward with your advice and cooperation so as to enable us to achieve our objectives for the cause of the geriatrics, neglected aged people and the last but not the least the down trodden and economically weak persons.
Now, I urge the secretary to place this report before the members.
